So speak encouraging words to one another. Build up hope so you’ll all be together in this, no one left out, no one left behind. I know you’re already doing this; just keep on doing it.
—1 Thessalonians 5:11 MSG
I get stoked talking about encouragement! It is not only the thing I love to do, but I do it without thinking because I can’t even help it.
I know that some of that excitement is a spiritual gift, but much of it comes from my own hopes for and deep need of being built up. So much of the world tears us down and keeps us limited that it can be difficult to see the positive, powerful, unique, lovable, valuable qualities that we possess and the endless possibilities that are before us in Christ. The intercessor and burden-bearer in me is in touch with this need and heart-desire of people and the need within me. God helps me to see the positive and what’s possible and to help give others a glimpse of the same.
To encourage means to inspire with spirit and confidence. My enthusiasm for encouragement certainly comes from the love of the Holy Spirit and the confidence I have in what the Lord can do with, through, and for us.
The spiritual gift that encouragement is attached to is exhortation. Exhortation comes from the Greek word Parakaleo, which means to admonish, to encourage, to beseech. Someone who has the full spiritual gift of exhortation will admonish folks (sort us out and put us on the right path) and “beseech” folks (petition, persuade, almost beg). They will do more than just encourage. Their gift is action-oriented with practical steps and accountability—something we all need to get to our next level.
The easiest way to feel encouraged is to have a group of people to help you. That’s why I LUH-UH-UV LOVE LOVE group coaching! The fastest way to help people see the possibilities and to build confidence is through laser coaching or a consultation session. These are fast and focused sessions of 15-30 minutes that help move you to your next level quickly. Schedule some time with me here.
