“Prosperity never had a problem finding me, but I had a problem being comfortable with it…Prosperity can be intimidating.” ~ Anonymous
I was at a meeting where a speaker was sharing a testimony of failure and success. She spoke eloquently about the role of the Spirit in her growth. She is someone who was once doubtful, insecure, and shy, but now she purposefully moves forward daily toward her own personal success goals.
The speaker shared her thoughts on being successful. As she looked over her life, she realized that prosperity came easily to her, but she wasn’t always sure what to do with the blessings that came her way. (More on this in a minute.)
The word “prosperity” has built up a bad reputation in recent years based on the teachings of a few people in the body of Christ. This reputation is unfortunate and undeserved!
Merriam-Webster describes prosperity as “the condition of being successful or thriving, ESPECIALLY economic well-being” (emphasis in original). The definition of prosperity is not exclusively focused on money. The description includes a level of financial security that is best for a unique individual, but it is much bigger than that. There is a sense of wholeness, health, joy, and growth in the definition of prosperity.
Our G.O.D.A.S.S.E.T.S. are forms of prosperity. What happens when our faith life (G) is strong and God gives us passions (D), visions (O), knowledge (A), and power (S) in that direction? When we mature enough to resolve the challenges that come with working with others (S)? When we are emotionally mature enough to know that how we respond to situations (S & T) is more important to our destiny than what happens to us (E)?
We are often surprised and shocked that we are functioning so well that it makes us uncomforable. We wait for the other shoe to drop. We feel like frauds. We get stuck in our own doubts. We wonder if we’re making it all up. (Spoiler alert: we’re not!)
Prosperity is NOT a bad word, but we often don’t know what to do with it when it does come to us.
The full title of my book is The G.O.D.A.S.S.E.T.S.: God’s Investment In You and What To Do With It. It is one thing to know that you are a living, walking blessing to others, but it is another thing to move past the intimidation of your own power and to use your gifts effectively.
So, rather than guess and get nervous, what else can we do when prosperity in its various forms comes our way? If you are at a point where you know you have gifts, callings, talents, abilities, a plan for more like a business or an organization, or a general desire to up-level from where you are–step up!
When we think about being successful on our own terms, or thriving in a healthy way, then it’s easy to see that prosperity is an ongoing, lifelong aspiration worthy of pursuit. Whether it’s a wellness, prosperity, or a desire to launch our G.O.D.A.S.S.E.T.S.–these all include a requirement for consistent forward-movement.
